1. Taking vitamins or supplements by mouth are not always effective.

When you take a pill by mouth it requires gastrointestinal tract absorption. There are many variables that affect this absorption and hence the bioavailability. Some inhibiting factors include caffeine, alcohol consumption, medications, and stress (Rowe, 2020). Additionally, if you suffer from digestive issues or disease, you may not have important micronutrients available. This is caused by malabsorption and includes celiac disease, pancreatic disease, lactose intolerance, and pernicious anemia (Johns Hopkins, 2021).

If the nutrient is absorbed through the G.I. tract it then has the risk of being filtered out by a first pass of the liver. First pass effect, also known as first-pass metabolism is the term used for hepatic metabolism of drug when absorbed (Talevi et al. 2018). The liver receives the majority of the initial blood flow from the G.I. tract and can metabolize the nutrient making it far less available to the rest of the body.
